There are thousands of motorcycle accident injuries every year in Florida with many accidents resulting in the death of the motorcyclist. Three out of four motorcycle accidents involve a collision with a passenger automobile. One-fourth of all motorcycle wrecks resulted from loss of control due to driver error or roadway defects. Note, that mechanical failure of the motorcycle, bad weather and carrying a passenger do not play a significant role in motorcycle accident statistics. In motorcycle collisions with automobiles, the auto driver usually violated the motorcyclist’s right of way. The failure of motorists to notice and be aware of motorcycles in traffic is the main cause of motorcycle accidents. Too many times the driver of a passenger auto simply does not ‘see’ the motorcycle before the collision. The most common motorcycle-car collision occurs when the auto makes a left turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle, most typically at a street intersection.
How to Avoid Motorcycle Accidents
Accidents between motorcycles and cars are significantly reduced by turning on motorcycle headlights in the daytime and the rider wearing highly visible colors, such as yellow, orange or bright colored jackets. Motorcycle rider training reduces accident likelihood and trained riders have less severe injuries in accidents. Lack of experience also contributes to accidents as most motorcyclists involved in accidents have little or no experience at the operation of the motorcycle. In a large percentage of accidents the rider was not wearing any type of eye protection. As with most traffic accidents, failure to pay attention and alcohol are common factors involved in serious motorcycle accidents because these factors drastically reduce the rider’s collision avoidance capability. In such situations riders are unable to coordinate front and rear braking and the ability to steer or swerve was lost due to inattention or impaired due to drug or alcohol use. Because motorcycle accidents play out in just seconds, anything that distracts or affects the rider’s reflex action can be a determining factor in whether the wreck can be avoided.
As expected, older drivers are more likely to be involved in motorcycle crashes, as are accidents where the motorcyclist had no motorcycle license, drivers license, or had a revoke drivers license.
Motorcycle Accident Injuries
Personal injury from a motorcycle accident of any kind is extremely likely, with severity of injury increasing with speed, motorcycle power and alcohol use. Common injuries from such accidents are to the ankle-foot, lower leg, knee, thigh-upper leg, groin, and the chest and head.Helmet use is the single most important factor in the prevention of head injury, and studies show that safety helmets do not affect hearing, visual field width or any other interference with the rider. Again, riders and passengers with helmets have less severe head and back injuries. Studies also show that, contrary to popular belief, there is no greater risk of neck injury from wearing a safety helmet.
